Smoking ban for Barclay premises
Smoking in Sark has been banned in premises owned by Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay.
Sark Estate Management (SEM) has outlawed the practice in many of it properties, including the Aval Du Creux and the Dixcart hotels.
The decision was taken after the island's medical committee asked for islanders' views on the idea.
SEM spokesman Kevin Delaney said in his experience of smoking bans in the UK, the move was normally well received.
The ban, which came into effect at midnight on Monday, also applies to Hugo's Brasserie and the Bel Air.
Drinkers' choice
The billionaire Barclay twins, who own Brecquhou, are the wealthiest people in the Channel Islands and are the biggest property owners in Sark.
Sandra Williams, a member of the Chief Pleas [Sark's government] who runs the bar in Island Hall where smoking is permitted, said there was no plan to introduce a similar ban there.
"The medical committee asked for peoples' views on a ban, but I don't think the response was very favourable," Ms Williams told BBC News.
"At the moment islanders have a choice of drinking upstairs in Island Hall where they can smoke, or downstairs on the ground floor where they can't and I think they're more or less happy with that choice.
"I certainly don't plan to enforce a ban."
Smoking is banned in all public buildings in Jersey, Guernsey and Herm, while Alderney's government is currently considering a ban (from thisisguernsey)

Re: Smoking ban for Barclay premises
as a reformed smoker i find it pleasant to go out for a meal and have a drinkie or three without coming home stinking of stale tobacco.one thing i will say is that there are a lot more people socialising outside pubs these days than in them.
