Re: Pensioner Gets Gas Cut Off
Sorry - it was already history (see date of incident) by the time it made GEP headlines - I Googled the author but could find nothing that he has written - maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.....and I get annoyed by the use of OAP!!! as a form of blackmail....are we all in our dottage as soon as we reach 65??? if so there's going to be rather a peculiar work force when we have to work until 67 before we can cry OAP!!!!

Thanks chok (I was looking on your behalf BTW) but I cannot see anything to say this is the Michael Milford - there are several out there including one on Facebook - but nothing to say where he is from (only that his books are for sale in Australia) ......

Re: Pensioner Gets Gas Cut Off
On the surface this looks like a Utility company being arrogant again, but questions have to be asked.
It states that the Gas Co installed their cooker 7 years ago.
If a cupboard has been installed since then above the cooker, the Gas Co would have their safety in mind.
The regulation in NZ and I am sure would be the same in the Uk, is that nothing must be installed less than 600mm above a cooker or hob top.
Anything lower stands a good chance of catching fire, with obvious circumstances.
We are not told of any dialogue concerning this cupboard, wether they were asked to remove it and if they would comply.
The obvious answer here was to disconnect and isolate the cooker and then the gas could have been turned on to the rest of their appliances.
A cooker is not a recognised form of heating and should never be used as such.
I find it hard to believe they were left a week without gas without a very good reason.
The headline would have been somewhat different had their house burnt down.

Re: Pensioner Gets Gas Cut Off
I agree there KiwiG - and as soon as a headline states OAP I switch off they are not exactly in their dottage - and if he is an author then it would not be difficulat to make a sob story out of something quite normal....it also took them a long long time to stress about it enough to tell the GP!!! and as you say, if the house had caught fire the Gas Company would have copped an unfortunate one with bells on!!!!
