minimum wage
Plans for minimum wage
Guernsey's Commerce
and Employment Department wants to set a minimum wage rate of six pounds
from October.
That would apply to workers over nineteen, while people between sixteen
and nineteen would get at least four pounds twenty five.
The island currently has no minimum wage legislation so the move would
bring it more in line with the UK and Jersey.
The States will debate the proposals at the end of May.(from channelonline)

Re: minimum wage
whilst i agree with minimum wage legislation surely it is ludicrous that a parents of children /adults with disabilities in receipt of invalid care allowance are paid much less than the minimum wage being proposed...
before anyone starts saying why should you be paid for caring for your disabled child/adult let me explain...to be in receipt of the magnificent sum of £71 per week for caring for your child/adult with disabilities you have to give that care for a minimum of 35 hours a week... the person you are caring for has to be in receipt of attendance allowance which means they need care with all needs that you and i take for granted that most peeps can do. you are also allowed togo out and earn the magnificent sum of £112 a week if you can find an employer who will let you down tools if you are called by the school or day centre if there is a problem with your adult/child....so maybe as we parents are saving the states of guernsey in the region of £100,000 per person being cared for in the community they should be looking at paying us at least the minimum wage too...by the way in jersey the same allowance is over £200 per week.

Re: minimum wage
mmm I can imagine that there are some employers who are not going to like this minimum wage, I can think of one grower who advertised he paid £4.50 a hour, bet he is not a happy bunny...
