Save money? Get rid of Culture and Leisure – deputy
IF THE States truly wants to save money, it should get rid of the Culture and Leisure Department and merge Treasury with Social Security, according to St Sampson’s deputy Sam Maindonald.
She was speaking on yesterday’s BBC Guernsey phone-in, which covered a range of topics such as States expenditure, civil servants’ pay and whether details should be made public, and whether it was appropriate for senior ministers to criticise departments in the media.
Treasury minister Charles Parkinson has been under fire from several States members for coming down hard on departments’ spending, in particular that of Health and Social Services, in comments he has made to the media.
Deputy Maindonald (pictured) said the minister’s actions had been ‘shameful’ and called for Treasury to help departments work together to save money.(from thisisguernsey)
mmm sounds like the back biting has begun...

ah the old S&M....
right about the public sector in the phone in
wrong about so much else
geting rid of C&L seems a bit harsh, but merging SocSec with something like Home, rather than Treasury, may make sense.
Parkinson is a rent a gob for the media. he knows he's going. he can dig the expensive shoes in where he likes.
If the public want good quality services then we have to be taxed to pay for them. Starting with those that can most afford it. The social well-being of the island is just as important (the 'wow factor') as one's overloaded personal wealth.

Sitting on the fence a bit, is Parkinson right about department spending. If the states tightened up on budgets and overstaffing, jobs for the boys and all that crud (if that is an issue) wouldn't that be a start. Merging departments is another option but I don'tt see the benefit of treasury being merged with anyone.
