Waste disposal: What's your solution?
There's an invitation to everyone in Guernsey to pop in to Beau Sejour next weekend to say how they think the island should deal with its waste. Decisions need to be made soon.
Public drop-in sessions are being staged in the Concourse on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (1-3 October). It is one of a series of events over the coming months designed to allow the entire community to give their views on the island's waste plan.
Two workshop sessions were held earlier this month, attended by more than 100 representatives of local business, parish douzaines, community organisations, charities, and environmental groups. These focussed on the wide objectives of the plan, and the criteria to be taken into account in assessing options.
Feedback from those workshops will be presented at the drop-in sessions. Islanders will have a chance to discuss the initial findings and add their own comments. There will also be information on the island's current waste management, and an opportunity to sign up to receive regular updates on how the waste disposal plans are developing.
Before any decisions are made there will be more workshops and drop-in sessions to look at things like the type of treatment processes and systems to be used.
Public Services Deputy Minister, Deputy Scott Ogier, is encouraging everyone to have a say at Beau Sejour next weekend. The Department is already working on some of the technical aspects of waste disposal, such as options for waste minimisation, and is examining various treatment processes which could form part of the final scheme.
