Farewell Nelson
One of the most popular mammals at the Durrell wildlife park in Jersey has died.
Nelson the slender-tailed meerkat, was born in November 1998 and came to Durrell, along with his mum, dad, brothers and sisters, a year later.
Nelson and his partner Madison produced an amazing 48 offspring.
Nelson was the most adopted animal at Durrell, ahead of Bandro the Alaotran Gentle Lemur.
Keepers have been concerned about how the rest of the group would deal with the loss of the dominant male. So far, though, it's reported they appear to be coping well. The Group is being closely monitored to see if there's a natural successor to Nelson.
