Tanning teens can still use sunbeds, despite UK law
YOUNG sunbed users in Jersey will still be able to top up their tans despite a new law in the UK outlawing the practice for under-18s.
The law comes into force today and bans anyone under 18 from using sunbeds. Business owners who do not comply could be fined up to £20,000.
Although it is not being enforced in Jersey, some tanning salons have decided to abide by the new UK age limit. However there are some places that still allow 16 and 17 year olds to use tanning machines.
At Club Carrefour, members must be at least 16 to join. ‘We always monitor the age of the young people that come into the club for tanning,’ said Nathalie Hawkin of Club Carrefour. ‘We also monitor the length of time they spend on the sunbeds, as well as how often they go on them. We would never let a young person have a full 12 minute session, which is the longest you can spend on a sunbed at one time’. (from JEP)
