School swimming lessons generally involve a 25-metre pool, inflatables and a teacher with a whistle - but not in Alderney.

Pupils have to make do with the island's natural resources - even when they're learning life-saving skills.

Because the island doesn't have a suitable pool St Anne's School pupils have to take a dip in the sea.

These youngsters have recently completed a 16-week life-saving course and are thought to be the only ones in the British Isles not to use a swimming pool.

And while it was tough going at Braye Beach in the colder months, the pupils say they prefer getting out in the open. (from GEP)
