Dive Ends In Tragedy. Empty Dive Ends In Tragedy.

There has been a tragedy during excavation of the Elizabethan wreck which lies off Alderney.

A diver has died during work on the site this afternoon (Sunday).

The
diver, thought to be a middle-aged man, was brought ashore at Braye.
Attempts to revive him had failed and he was confirmed dead on the
quayside.

At 15.28 Alderney Radio received a distress call from
the rigid inflatable boat 'Windbreaker' which was the support boat for
a group of divers diving on the Elizabethan wreck.

'Windbreaker'
reported an emergency with one of the divers and requested immediate
assistance. At 15.40 the Alderney Lifeboat was launched and at 15.45
the diver was landed ashore at Braye Harbour where he was not
breathing.

Attempts were made to revive him by a doctor and St
John's ambulance crew. Sadly these efforts were in vain. Death was
confirmed at the point of landing.

Alderney Police have launched
an investigation into this incident and will be reporting in due course
to the coroner's office. The details of the deceased have not been
released as next of kin have yet to be informed.

The Harbour Master has suspended all diving on the wreck until the results of the investigation are known.

For
several years specialist archaeologists have been excavating the wreck
- one of the most important for British naval history.

The
wreck lies in the swinge - a notoriously dangerous stretch of water.
Currents run at up to eight knots which means the dive team can only
operate in slack water - a tiny window of just 40 minutes at a time.

"A JERSEY diver has died as he worked on an ancient shipwreck off the coast of Alderney.

The man, who has not been named, died yesterday afternoon just days after work to excavate and restore part of the 400-year-old wreck began.

It is understood that the diver resurfaced after a successful dive and handed in his equipment before falling ill. By the time rescue measures had begun, the diver was already dead."
