There is a false perception that immigrants take jobs away from locally-qualified people, says the president of the Chamber of Commerce.

The most recent official figures show nearly 1,400 people are registered as unemployed in Jersey.

David Warr believes some people refuse to work in jobs they believe they are over-qualified for, such as being a barman or waitress.

He said that drove local businesses to employ from off-island.

Mr Warr said: "I know the hospitality are looking for 100 local individuals to work in the industry, they actually only found 70 people."
