British number one Andy Murray claimed the biggest title of his tennis career as he comprehensively outplayed the legendary Roger Federer to take Olympic gold.

At two games all in the first set things seemed to be going to the script of a tight match with the world number one and recent Wimbledon champion overcoming his British opponent for the second time on centre court in exactly four weeks.

Murray, however, had other plans and reeled off an incredible ten straight games to take that first set 6-2 and open up a 5-0 lead in the second.

With union flags fluttering all across the crowd the Suisse had no answer for Murray’s more aggressive play and lost his serve at 2-2 in the third set to succumb to a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 loss after an epic battle on Murray’s serve in the third game of the second set.

The Scotsman then served out his last three games to round off a memorable victory.

Murray has the chance of a double gold for Team GB today as he partners Laura Robson against Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi from Belarus at 4pm.
