No shops in Jersey will be permitted to open on Christmas Day following the introduction of new Sunday trading laws last year.

In previous years, some corner shops and garages had been allowed to open for a few hours.

The constables' committee is urging islanders to plan ahead for Christmas.

Constable John Gallichan, the chairman of the committee, said it would not be possible to make last minute purchases on Christmas Day.

"This includes food and drink, presents and also petrol for vehicles so we are reminding the public to plan ahead this year," he said.

Shops smaller than 700 sq m can request a permit from the constable to open on Boxing Day.

Constable Gallichan said it would mean only a limited number of shops will open.
