Plans for a 36 unit development of social and private housing in Alderney have been passed.

The site of the old Grand Hotel on the Butes will see nine flats and four terraced properties built for the Housing Association and 23 luxury houses and flats.

The States is giving the Housing Association a grant of £296,000 to fund the social housing.

The development is being built by Grand Hotel Developments. Director Paul Venton said: "The project will be a boost to the Island's economy, and in particular the construction industry. It has been my aim all along to work with local contractors."

The private properties will consist of seven four bed houses, and 16 two bed apartments and penthouses, with lift access to all floors.

Mr Venton said it would make use of a 'home zone' design, aimed at lowering speeds.

Work is due to start in March.

Meanwhile the Building Development and Control Committee have again deferred making a decision on Alderney Housing Association's plans for a development at Platte Saline.

The Association wants to gain planning approval for the sea front site in case the Grand Hotel Development plan does not come to fruition
