Jersey unemployment rises to equal record high Empty Jersey unemployment rises to equal record high

Unemployment in Jersey has continued to rise and has equalled the highest levels seen in the island.

At the end of November 1,820 people were registered unemployed, exactly the same as the figures in February when it was at its highest.

The number of unemployed has risen steadily since September.

However, the number of long-term unemployed and those aged 16-19 out of work fell with nearly 200 finding a job through the back to work scheme.

Social Security Minister Francis Le Gresley said the loss of jobs in parts of the fulfilment industry, which left the island after the loss of Low Value Consignment Relief (LVCR), was a "significant" reason for the rise.

LVCR allowed for no VAT to be charged on goods under £15 sent to the UK from outside of the European Union, but was ended for the Channel Islands in April.
