Guernsey's new slaughterhouse will not be completed before the summer of 2013.

The facility at Longue Hougue was scheduled to be completed this year, with the current site due to close in April.

Work has started but project manager Shaun Sale said the timescale had had to be reassessed after complications with the new building's design.

"We've had to take time to understand the needs of the States of Guernsey for the new slaughterhouse," he said.

Mr Sale said the project had "involved lots of design and actually visiting the existing slaughterhouse to understand the whole concept fully and incorporate all of those requirements into the new design".

A new slaughterhouse was deemed necessary after the Commerce and Employment Department determined the current site could not be upgraded sufficiently to meet EU standards.

Since April, cattle more than 30 months old have had to be incinerated, rather than slaughtered and sold for meat.

The fifth paragraph surprises me. Has this contract been given to people who have never designed a slaughter house before ?

Perhaps not, but that's the way it reads.
