WORK on Albecq Ward at the Castel Hospital is being carried out in
an ‘uncaring manner’ around patients suffering from mental illnesses,
hospital visitor Jenny Cooke has claimed.
‘I do feel the people of Guernsey should be made aware,’ said Mrs Cooke. ‘Are we a society so inept that this is acceptable?’
Mrs Cooke described the ward as a ‘soul-destroying place’. She said
the current work, which includes replacing floors and drilling into
walls, was too noisy for the patients to endure.
‘There is no privacy, even in newly-created single rooms. These
patients are ill and require peace and calm.’ She felt that such work
would not be carried out around patients at the Princess Elizabeth
Hospital.
In his response, to Mrs Cooke’s letter to the Guernsey Press,
Health and Social Services minister Deputy Hunter Adam writes: ‘Your
correspondent states that this work would not have been contemplated on
a medical or surgical ward, but I can advise that the department is
about to undertake some upgrading work on Victoria Wing at the Princess
Elizabeth Hospital and that this work will be undertaken while the
patients are using those facilities.

Should the patients have been moved out while works are carried out ?

really depends on the type of work but if constant noise and/or dust then alternative places for patients should be found, regardless of the type of patient, I suppose a Patien with a mental illness could actually be more affected by the works than regular patients at the PEH.

Gsy should be ashamed of itself the way people with a mental illness in the island are treated......But it's like everything is it not , 'if it does not imapct on me then I don't give a dam'...a typical english trait.....................

From what i have been told it is nearly impossible to get hold of a psychiatrist when you need one as HSSD say they have to cut back due to the restraints they are under.I belive the ones that are here are locoms so they don't really get to know their patients.

there is now a permanent psychiatrist at the castel hospital.how long this will last is anybodies guess.i do think more thought and care should have gone into the feelings of patients while work is being done at the castel.the mentally ill are very vulnerable people and need stability around them at all times .
