Police force orders bicycles to cut fuel bill .
A police force has been forced to order 120 bicycles for officers to use
instead of cars in an effort to cut its £2.5 million fuel bill.
The Devon and Cornwall police, which covers the largest area in England, is
facing an increase of £300,000 on its annual bill for force cars this year.
They have ordered an extra 120 bicycles so more police can patrol in the
traditional way using their own energy rather than fuel.
Martin Davies, head of transport at the force, said he hoped the switch would
not reduce levels of policing. He said: "We have just taken delivery of an extra 120 bicycles which seem
to be working well in areas where they are being used.
"On top of that there are the basic fuel saving exercises like car
sharing.
"Our income is fixed and we just have to manage as best we can and the
increased costs can be absorbed elsewhere in the force.
"We are putting the emphasis on front line services and cutting down on
areas we can manage like training or attending meetings.
"We cover around 20 million miles a year and the increase in spending is
coming despite all the measures we are taking."
Do you think some of our officers would be better on bikes ?
