A £10,000 pair of diamond earrings have been recovered from a New York rubbish tip after accidentally being thrown away.

The owner of the diamonds, her
husband and the city's dustmen were luckily able to find the earrings,
but only after sorting through a lorry-load of stinking rubbish.

Complete with three-carat diamonds, the earrings were an anniversary gift for Haya Sharon, who called the find "a miracle".

The precious gems were left in a small jar of cleaning solution in
the Ms Sharon's jewellery shop when they were accidentally thrown away
by a worker.

They were finally tracked down at the former Fresh Kills landfill,
where New York's rubbish is compacted and shipped out of the state.

Spokesman for the dump Keith Mellis has said it's not the first time precious gems have been rescued from piles of city rubbish.

Past treasure discoveries have even included engagement rings.

I can remember a few years ago when our tip was shut down for days
Because someone had lost alot of jewelry..dont know how much it was worth but it did cause a stir .dont think they found any of it as well
