Jersey ‘could be another Dunblane’
JERSEY could become the scene of another Dunblane unless the Island’s guns laws are changed, a firearms officer has warned.
Centenier Jim Rigby, the gun officer for St Saviour, said that a meeting is needed to discuss ways of tightening up firearms laws before the Island suffers a shooting tragedy.
He spoke out after Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabularies said that measures to protect Islanders from illegally owned firearms were ‘inconsistent and ineffective’.
The independent report raised serious concerns about the current licensing system and the fact that it is Constables who grant the licences and the States police who keep a register of firearms owners. (from CIonline)
It must be sorted this system is antiquated and needs updating quickly..
Re: Jersey ‘could be another Dunblane’
It will take something like Dunblane to happen, then the authorties will do something, then it will be too late as usual

Re: Jersey ‘could be another Dunblane’
A massacre like Dunblane could happen in Jersey, or anywhere, regardless of any changes made to the gun laws; once somebody is intent on causing such bloodshed then they'll find a way.
That said limiting the availability of weapons is going to help matters, and the local licensing arrangements are laughable.
I am aware of an individual who owns, quite legally, a rifle designed solely for military use, with a telescopic scope and a recorded accuracy of 2,000m.
This weapon has no purpose in Jersey.
The same individual also legally owns several other firearms, including a silenced (!?) shot-gun.
Again these types of weapons have no purpose in Jersey.
It should be noted that this individual lives in a semi-detached house in town, so has little problem with rabbits pestering his crops, and more worrying is registered with the drugs unit as an addict!!
