Pierced punk in hot pants and biker boots runs village church .
A punk fan who has six piercings and wears biker boots with hot pants has been given a job in a Cotswolds village church.
The Rev Skye Denno is trying to avoid becoming 'another stuffy, middle-class vicar'The Rev Skye Denno admits parishioners often stare at her when she
wears her dog collar together with her rock star-style clothes. She
says she is a fan of the Sex Pistols, the punk band whose lead singer
once boasted of being an "antichrist", and enjoys going to gigs and
nightclubs. But the 29-year-old, who was ordained as a Church of
England deacon this summer and is now curate at St James the Great in
Dursley,
Gloucestershire, insists her look makes her more approachable. She says
she is just being herself, and trying to avoid becoming "another
stuffy, middle-class vicar".Rev Denno, a married mother-of-two, said:
"My clothes and how I look haven't been a problem."I think is makes me
more approachable and I haven't heard any grumbles. At the most people
have been a little surprised. "I
did walk down the street in biker boots, my hot pants and a dog collar
and got a few looks. I forget because that's who I am. I don't do it to
be difficult - it's just me. "I think God has chosen me because
I am me not because I am a woman. The church can get quite cliquey and
it's important for me to keep it real and not be another stuffy,
middle-class vicar."Rev Denno grew up wanting to be a
missionary, but went on to study art therapy before going to a
theological
training college in Gloucester. It was there that she realised her true
calling was to become a vicar. She said: "I had three dreams about
becoming ordained as a vicar for the Church of England. "They were very
detailed dreams that showed me the hardship of what was ahead."Rev
Denno, who was ordained at Gloucester Cathedral in June, calls her new
job an "apprenticeship" as she helps parishioners in Dursley with their
problems
and assists the rector, the Rev Janet Bromley."I think I love working
for the church because every day is different," Rev Denno said. "Also,
other than working for God you are really your own boss and it is nice
to have that freedom." But
she added: "I love dancing and I love gigs, and I do miss all that. I
like The Cure, Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Sisters of Mercy and Last
Dance."I would sometimes end up praying in a club."
I wonder how long she would last around here ?
