Elderly ‘have alcohol problem’
JERSEY has serious problems with alcohol abuse among elderly people, says a top UK health expert.
Professor Ian Philp, who advises the UK on elderly health-care, says that some elderly people drink themselves to death ‘silently and quietly’ at home because they are alone or unhappy.
He says that while heavy drinking is a problem in the UK, it is a bigger challenge for Jersey.
‘Alcohol is a problem in the Island. Older people can drink silently and quietly at home, and that causes problems,’ said Professor Philp, who worked in Jersey during the 1990s.
Is it only the elderly? I don't think so
