Tidal energy prospects
JERSEY is 15 years away from harnessing marine energy, according to retired Jersey Electricity Company managing director Mike Liston. He is now chairman of the Renewable Energy Group. Mr Liston says the economics to make tidal energy schemes work will prevent them from being a reality in Jersey for another 15 years. He says that the advantages for Jersey are not in energy production, but for selling the ‘clean’ energy in Europe where tariffs make it more valuable, and for maintaining energy security for the Island.

This is another situation where Jersey and Guernsey have gone separate ways. While Guernsey have put money into technology to deliver the sort of benefits Mr Liston taks about, Jersey has spent a fortune on a Waterfront with a plan to build loads of offices and some pokey flats for the workers, and a sunken road by the sea! Even with the economic minister talking on the recent senatorial hustings about economic difficulties and job losses, the plan for business quarter rolls on regardless. The latest difficulty -the preferred developers for the site – Harcourt – are currently fighting a court battle in Dublin but will start a battle of a different kind on Monday when they are questioned by two independent planning inspectors from the UK.
Exactly who is going to take these new offices, especially when we still have numerous empty ones in town?
It will be really interesting in 15-20 years time to see which island has it right.

Re: Tidal energy prospects
Hey come on 15 years time, we will be still in they same boat as now,
The States of Jersey are only interested in one thing "Finance"
and maybe to ruin the look of a beautiful island
15 years time the idea of energy saving will still be in backwaters of the Islands States Members minds
