Carol Thatcher in trouble at BBC over 'golliwog' remark .
Carol Thatcher has been summoned to talks with BBC executives after she
referred to a tennis player as a "golliwog".
The daughter of former prime minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher
made the remark during a private conversation with The One Show
presenter Adrian Chiles.Thatcher, 55, is one of the programme's
"roving reporters" and was discussing one of the male competitors in
the Australian Open last week.Although the conversation took
place in the green room and not on air, her remark was heard by several
members of the production team, as well as Chiles, who was described as
"shocked".It is understood that the BBC wants a formal apology
from Thatcher before they decide whether she can continue to appear on
the programme.A BBC source said: "There were a number of
complaints from people in the room about this particular remark, it did
cause offence. A number of people were quite taken aback by the
language."Thatcher, a journalist and writer, made a name for
herself by winning the ITV reality programme I'm a Celebrity... Get Me
Out of Here! in 2005.On The One Show's website, they praise her "dry, self-deprecating wit and tenacious spirit" and her "inimitable style".Her spokesman told The Times that her client never intended to cause any offence."She
made a light aside about this tennis player and his similarity to the
golliwog on the jampot when she was growing up," he said."There's
no way, obviously, that she would condone any racist comment - we would
refute that entirely. It would not be in her nature to do anything like
that."A BBC spokesman said: "The BBC considers any language of a
racist nature wholly unacceptable. We have raised the issue with the
individual concerned and are discussing it as a matter or urgency."
Oh dear ! Carol don't you read the Guernsey press .

Nice to see that the BBC possesses some morals and guts, as opposed to a majority of our lily-livered, pathetic States members

Love it !
Typical BBC though, mild comment in private gets one banned, crude insults to someone in public just gets one suspended.

Re: Carol Thatcher in trouble at BBC over 'golliwog' remark .
DECISION by the BBC to drop Carol Thatcher from The One Show after she used the term golliwog has been welcomed by the man who tried to sack Bernard Flouquet for using the same word.
Leon Gallienne today applauded the move by the corporation and said it was sending out the right message.
‘They are saying they will not tolerate racism in any shape or form,’ he said. ‘This shows the BBC is taking it seriously and maybe our government should have taken it a bit more seriously as well.’
Deputy Flouquet declined to comment. He made a number of apologies for his remark and was reprimanded by the members’ conduct panel, a recommendation which was endorsed unanimously by the States.

Re: Carol Thatcher in trouble at BBC over 'golliwog' remark .
I drink my coffee with no milk or cream and no sugar.
I used to ask for a 'black coffee' - in perfect innocence. I was only asking for my preferred choice of a hot beverage!
I know have to ask for 'a coffee, no milk or cream' otherwise "I might upset someone!" Has the world (well at least London!) gone totally potty (and I DO apologise if 'potty' is now an offensive word as it was not meant to be). Do I now have to live the rest of my live constantly apologising and elaborating on what I actually meant?

Your posts do indeed demonstrate your age Karma, and perhaps your political leanings. Language and what is deemed acceptable evolves over time, and what may have been an everyday term years ago may not be acceptable now. The "N" word for instance, would you think it's perfectly acceptable for that to be used today?
Unfortunately it appears that a significant percentage of people lose their ability to develop once they reach a certain age (50-60 maybe) and continue to believe that they live in a bygone age.

Re: Carol Thatcher in trouble at BBC over 'golliwog' remark .
I can't be bothered anymore, technophobe, the amount of ignorance is demoralising. The myths about 'PC' meddled by the right wing tabloids feed directly into the mindset that deems it necessary to perpetuate racism and sexism - because it's 'funny' or 'normal'.
People don't mean to be offensive when bandying racist stereotypes - which is not the same as national stereotypes - but they have to understand that it IS offensive and therefore decency must prevail.
Wayside's conclusion that black people look like golliwogs is EXACTLY the sort of thing that the white supremacists delight in posting on their websites. Whereas Wayside is ignoring the connotations to subjugation, segregation and derision, the far right know damn well the power of such symbolism - they hide behind 'PC gone mad' hysteria to peddle filth and make themselves acceptable.
It is for that reason that any reference to golliwogs-as-blacks should not be tolerated.
Carol Thatcher is now demanding an apology from the BBC, riding the BBC bashing trend driven by Murdoch and Dacre. I know damn well that if someone in the workplace decided to blurt out racism then there would be complaints made. Why should she, or Flouquet be any different.
Apologists need to shut up and let society progress beyond these enforced divisions and cure the cancer caused by centuries of falsehoods.

Thank you for you thoughts Technophobe - yes you are right about my age - but I still think that most people can get on with each other without interferance from others! I was bought up in the East End of London and it was tough - but we have friends from Sri Lanka and Senegal (whom we spent New Year with) and they agree that it is one sided (in France where they live as well as England) and that some people do indeed hide behin PC to the detrement of the ordinary caucasian.....I was very blonde and wore glasses - so the people I went to school had a field day!!!!! I survived and I also believe in live and let live - thin skin is a curse.....

Re: Carol Thatcher in trouble at BBC over 'golliwog' remark .
Too many big words in fast roberts post for me to figure out if He is having a dig or not, but either way Im not bothered.
When the golly was first invented do you honestly believe that it was made as an insult to black people, because I dont and never will, its just a character that happens to be black.
I am not sure when the name came about was it a golly as I remember it and if so was the name changed to golliwog later, I am not sure, all I do know is that what was always regarded as a toy character seemed to be labled as a racist thing years later, is it the name that offends or the character its self.
the same thing is said about the black and white minstals yet if a black mime artist puts on white face paint I dont see us all complaining.
Its all just a reason to use the race issue when no real issue exists and I sometimes wonder if there is an agenda to try and split the races by bringing it up all the time, why do most of the complaints come from white people.

Re: Carol Thatcher in trouble at BBC over 'golliwog' remark .
The following is a press release frm the BBC News..
It emerged today that managers of a gift shop on the Queen's estate at Sandringham, in Norfolk, have been forced to apologise after it was found to be selling golliwog toys. The toys, which had been priced at £9.99 each, have been withdrawn from sale
Senior BBC executive defended the decision to drop Carol Thatcher from The One Show for referring to a tennis player as a golliwog, saying that the remark had been overheard by up to a dozen people and had clearly caused offence.
The former prime minister's daughter was dropped on Tuesday night after talks with BBC bosses. They refused to accept her written apology or her claims that the remark had been made in jest.
Jay Hunt, the controller of BBC One, said today that Ms Thatcher had made the remark in a hospitality suite in front of the presenter Adrian Chiles, comedian Jo Brand and a senior charity worker from Comic Relief. She dismissed claims that the BBC was over-reacting.
“What Carol decides to say in the privacy of her own home or in a private conversation with friends is one thing. What she says in a greenroom space, when there are 12 people [there], in her capacity as a roving reporter for the One Show is a rather different thing," Ms Hunt told BBC Radio's Today programme.
“On this occasion, her using this phrase and it being overheard and having caused offence to a number of people was totally inappropriate. It was deemed inappropriate in the circumstances for her to continue to work on a show that prides itself not just on the diversity of its production team but on the range of its coverage across the country. I think everybody will be able to see that that is not an appropriate place for her to work.”
Ms Thatcher's agent claimed yesterday that the presenter had been the victim of a BBC vendetta linked to her family name. “This was a private conversation held in private, amongst individuals in the greenroom after she had been on The One Show. There is certainly an agenda behind this ... I would say that if her name were not Thatcher we wouldn’t be talking.
“Tthis comment was made in jest over a drink and no one objected to it at the time. I think it’s absolutely outrageous that the BBC has condoned this leak. They haven’t even disciplined the member of staff and frankly we issued a fulsome apology that was rejected by them. But they should be issuing us with an apology.”
She said that she knew who had leaked the story but was not prepared to reveal that person’s name. BBC sources told The Times, however, that Thatcher’s remarks were “not a one word thing” and that other people had been appalled.
Staff at The One Show denied leaking the details of the story, which first began to circulate on Friday but were not confirmed by the BBC until Monday.
None of the parties to the conversation has disclosed the identity of the tennis player to whom Ms Thatcher was referring. It is, however, known to be a male player who was taking part in the Australian Open.
Lord Tebbit, who served in Baroness Thatcher’s Cabinet, compared the sacking of Ms Thatcher to the BBC's recent reinstatement of Jonathan Ross. “It does seem very odd that Jonathan Ross can be back broadcasting having made obscene, insulting remarks on the air, and Carol Thatcher, who said something which is allegedly highly offensive but which I rather doubt was meant to be so, in private, should be banned in this way,” said Lord Tebbit.
“It is probably a bit of a way for the BBC to get back at Carol’s mother.”
Ms Thatcher continues to work for the BBC on other programmes - she has been recording material this week for a radio feature on her mother - but Ms Hunt said that she would no longer work on The One Show.
“She still maintains that this was a comment made in jest. We have ascertained subsequently from the people who are party to that conversation that by nobody’s reckoning could it be deemed to have been used in a jokey fashion," she said.
“Do we think it is appropriate in 2009 for somebody to explain away the use of a word which is deemed by a very substantial proportion of the public to be hugely offensive as a joke? What I find sad about the entire situation is that we have given Carol ample opportunity to apologise for offence that was caused to key named individuals.
“She felt unable to do that and for that reason it is not appropriate for her to work on that particular show, but she will continue to work for the BBC and indeed is.”

Re: Carol Thatcher in trouble at BBC over 'golliwog' remark .
I really cant believe that Jo Brand would have been offended, although being a commedien she would know its dodgy at the moment and probably would have said you cant say that these days (probably tougue in cheek)
What is interesting is how people are manipulating it to sound worse, originally it was said that she said he looked like a golliwog, now the story is she called him a golliwog which seems a lot worse to me.
