Lily Allen sparks new drugs controversy
Lily Allen is at the centre of another drugs row today after claiming that children should be allowed to try class-A substances.
The singer's latest remarks come just weeks after she was criticised for suggesting that the use of cocaine is "no problem at all".
Speaking about class-A drugs like ecstasy, Allen told Dutch magazine Revu: "Parents should say, 'Drugs might seem fun, but they do funny things to your brain. Some people react to it good, some don't. Try it and see what you think'."
The star added that fame currently prevents her from using ecstasy pills herself, explaining: "If I hadn't been famous I'd have taken loads. Wouldn't be too wise right now."
Speaking to the News Of The World, Tory MP Patrick Mercer has described Allen's comments as "extraordinary", while Rob Broomfield, from Dads Against Drugs, labelled her "immature".
Allen insisted that she does not condone illegal drug use after facing criticism for her previous remarks in January.
What is this woman like, maybe a good singer, but her opinion about drugs and encouraging her children to try them is beyond me...

Kids will dabble and try things ...but to be encouraging them. ..ridiculous comments IMO........

Re: Lily Allen sparks new drugs controversy
her comments are doing what she is best at - being controversial for the sake of it and to draw attention to herself.....it worked!!!!! she has only to look at her 'friend' Amy Winehouse to see the stupidity of what she is suggesting!!!!!

Drugs are a way of life today in every city, town, village and island theres nothing shocking with what she says maybe to honest for her own good.
I think everyone knows someone who has taken drugs.Unless we want to live the lie and deny it exists which happens in Guernsey on many subjects.eg child abuse

Re: Lily Allen sparks new drugs controversy
I almost lost my son to heroin/substance (whatever he could get hold of) addiction - he is clean now, after 15 years of hell all round) - but will never work again through the effects - so sorry - a way of 'life' a way of slow 'death' more like!!!! and as he moved in the heroin/cocaine/canabis fueled circles the same applies to most of his friends who thought they were in control!!! and are now on the 'permanent' list for benefit payments.......it broke his dad's heart (as an Italian who would have done anything for his son - but couldn't save him from that) - I am proud of him because he is now clean - but the once alert mind that made plans for the future - alas does not now exist!!! There is no future for him :-(

This story can be told a million times over and in many cases they are not so lucky to survive, drugs are here to stay and will continue to cause heartache and pain for many families.

karma, obviously I'm sorry for the heartache and difficulties that your family have experienced through your sons drug use, but I have a question; before he started using drugs what advice had you given him as a parent on drug use?

......the usual Troy - then he got in with a bad crowd (his choice) and got into trouble - at 15 he was sent to borstal in England and never looked back - everything he needed in the way of drugs was available - he met hardened criminals - who at 15 he looked up to, simply because they laughed at the reason he was there (for knocking a policeman's hat off) because they would have been told to go home - he was removed from his family at the most vulnerable age and desperate for kudos, saw that the only way was to join them and be one of the 'big boys'....they don't do that now - but people of his age were just shipped out with no thought for the consequence (being a small Island his book was marked from a very young age - therefore all he's ever done in the way of work is on trawlers and crabbing boats) - and our daughter who is two years younger has never been a problem before people start saying 'I blame the parents' as she once said to me when I was in absolute despair - mum if it had been you and dad , I would have been the same!!!

Re: Lily Allen sparks new drugs controversy
I'm assuming the usual is to tell them not to use drugs, drugs are bad etc. ... which sadly in your case, and in many many cases, simply didn't and doesn't work. So Ms Allen's view that talking openly to a child, explaining that drugs effect people differently and giving them the chance to take responsibility for their actions, while staying supportive might not be such a bad idea.karma wrote:......the usual Troy...
I'm sure(I know many) many people who dabbled in drugs and still went on to have great lives unaffected, just like many whose lives fall apart with no (illegal) drug use.
There is NO right answer for all, and there's no putting the genie back in the bottle, so openness is just as good an idea as absolute negativity on the subject is futile.

Re: Lily Allen sparks new drugs controversy
I would like to agree with you Troy - but as with sex education (the child has a right to choose) being open about it has not stopped the flood of underage pregnancies that abound in this present time (13 year old dad says it all)....it is not ignorance as they are taught from the cradle now - I am not negative and yes still talk to my son - he tells me more now, since his dad died, it is no longer all bottled up inside of him, but unfortunately it will not give him back his life....as these young parents will never again be carefree! I can see it from both side - but Lily cannot have failed to see the effect it is having on some of her peers, there is no easy answer - as you say you know people who dabbled and are now leading normal happy lives (as I do) and I applaud them - my husband died of cancer age 56 and his oncologist told him it was through smoking - my aunt on the other hand lived until she was 88 having smoked since the age of 10.........so as with all things that are addictive, some people are destined to become addicted and some people aren't - so maybe that fact should explained by the parents of children who are excouraged to experiment

Re: Lily Allen sparks new drugs controversy
It appears that a lot of these so called 'celebrities' are often quoted with controversial comments that are intended to cause 'outrage' and comment. Unfortunately they make outrageous comments to fill the trashy magazines / gutter press papers that are all the vogue these days. It as all about PR, raising their profile by keeping them in the media and by people talking about them! Works doesn't it?!?
