Jobs: It will get worse
TREASURY Minister Philip Ozouf has issued a stark warning to Islanders to prepare for some difficult months ahead following the news of job cuts at Royal Bank of Scotland International.RBSI announced yesterday that they were losing 90 jobs at their offshore operations in Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar.
The Jersey Evening Post has learned that 22 of those roles had already been lost through natural wastage, which brought the total figure of job cuts to 68. The trade union Unite has reacted angrily to the news, saying that RBSI staff should not be let go because of the ‘failures of those at the top’.
The depressing prospect of more job losses to come was made worse yesterday following Gordon Brown’s speech to the US Senate in which he signalled that he wanted to outlaw offshore tax havens.
The Prime Minister said that it was time that world leaders came together to address the corrosive force of secrecy in banking jurisdictions. (from thisisjersey)

Re: Jobs: It will get worse
As I have said on several occasions, we will soon be getting VAT at UK rates. Not only will this fill the black hole, it will also solve the de minimis problem.

Re: Jobs: It will get worse
nobody would listen to deputy parkinson when he stated that this would happen if guernsey implemented the 0/10 tax strategy.now his words have come true.more taxes, no wage increases we might as well just hand our salaries over to the states .they can then pay our bills and give us food vouchers to live on.as always the rich get richer and the working man gets poorer

Re: Jobs: It will get worse
I dont know what the big fuss is aboy RBS cutting jobs, with the ones already left its 68 I am sure there are about 20 that will be happy to retire leaving 48 between Us, Jersey, Isle of Man and Gibralter average 10 each, many of which will not be local, so why the big fuss or is it because they are a bank.
I often wonder where all the money that the finance industy was supposidly generating all these years actually went to, it seems we were leaching off other world governments yet not making what we should have, the banks made a bumdle to pay the high bonuses we make a few quid and other governments loose a lot in taxes.
It reminds me a little of when a customer says I would like to use my credit card as I get air miles and they get £1 worth of airmiles and the retailer gets charged £25.

Re: Jobs: It will get worse
I think that the fuss is to do with the fact that this bank is only the 'scout' others will follow.....and the high earners are still 'in situ' usually they are the non-islanders 'cause all 'experts' seem to be imported......and no one forces the retailer to accept credit cards they do have a choice - states departments levy a % for using them!!!

Re: Jobs: It will get worse
I am not complaining about the cost of using a card I was highlighting that when people use a card ONLY to get there airmiles the retailer pays about 25 times the value of the miles the customer gets.
In the same way that Guernsey has earnt only a small % of the losses that other governments have lost and thats why we have so little left and why we could not afford a depositors guarentee scheme.
