Airports charge passengers £5 to jump security check queue.
A controversial new scheme allowing passengers to pay a fee to queue-jump is being introduced at airports around the country.Luton
is the latest airport to adopt the system, charging travellers £3 to
join a special lane at the security scanners and save queueing time. The service is already in place at Leeds, Liverpool and Bristol airports, where it costs up to £5.
But passenger groups say the scheme could mean other airport users will be delayed.
Simon
Evans, of the Air Transport Users Council, said: 'There is a danger
this could result in a worse service for passengers in the ordinary
queue, who will be pushed back by each person who pays the fee. That
would be unacceptable.'Liverpool airport, which introduced the fee in 2007, says that about 10 per cent of passengers pay to queue-jump.
If a similar proportion did the same at Luton it would raise £3million a year.
Luton
airport said: 'Some people choose to pay extra for valet parking or
access to the executive lounge and we think they would appreciate the
choice to bypass the queues at security. People may want to treat
themselves.'
Earlier this month, budget
airline Ryanair sparked criticism when it announced plans to charge £1
to use the toilet onboard planes. Chief executive Michael O’Leary said it would raise £15million a year, which could be passed on to passengers in fare savings.AIRPORT EXTRAS

Although I dont agree with the Idea of paying for express security If it was set up an an extra facility and self funding It would be OK,
Uppper Class (1st Class) already have this facility which is paid from there ticket price so probably no real difference

You pay your money or take your time. Customers choice!
What if the majority pay and then that fast-track queue becomes the slower one! LOL.

Easy peasy - then they will create a 'super tax' on people unwilling to pay !!!!

I have often wondered what would happen if everyone tomorrow only sent by 2nd class post, would the post office take a day off.
I have known the fastrack to be closed down a few times in gatwick when they are extra busy.

Yes, what I was alluding to really Wayside. A lot of these ideas are fine in principle and work when there is little demand on them but when they take off in a big way it does not work as promised and the situation becomes as bad or even worse than the original position!!
Now where have I put my 'anti-cynical' pills?
