Belt up in the back!!
A former deputy and road safety officer in Guernsey is calling for the
island to make it compulsory to belt-up in the back of cars.
It's already law in the United Kingdom, and Jersey followed suit last week.
Peter Derham says it would save lives. He spoke to Channel Television reporter Andy Richards.
What do you guys think ?

Re: Belt up in the back!!
I'm sure it would. Please find the following list which will do the same:-
Ban Smoking
" Booze
" High fat products
" All vehicles that exceed 15MPH
" Rock climbing
" Caving
" Diving
" Mountaineering
" etc etc
All of the above and a thousand other pursuits can end in death but then inevitably so does life?
Where do you draw the line?

Yes, I do believe you have the chap Thistle!
And, before that he was a policeman, I think the road safety officer who used to teach school kids the 'Tufty Club' of road safety!!!!
I wonder if he was instrumental in getting the front seat belt law in?

Re: Belt up in the back!!
A good idea and a sensible piece of law. I do all the time.
Thistle, whose freedom of choice should it be. Mine as the front seat passenger with my belt done up holding me securely, or yours as the rear seat passenger sitting behind me. Accident occurs and you go through the front windscreen (your freedom of choice) in an impressive red arrows fly past. Now I am going to be mightily pi**ed off as you kindly remove my head as you go over the top of me. That certainly wasn't part of my freedom of choice.
Bug1 life is full of dangers but I make the decision to do a dangerous activity knowing the risks. I sit in the front of a car and accept there may be a prang but I also expect other passengers to take as much care as possible to reduce the risk.
Anti regulation brigade will be up in arms but think about the reduction in death and injuries and it is not a bad idea, after all it is a piece of legislation that effects what injuries your actions cause others.

Re: Belt up in the back!!
The stats do prove that it is far safer to 'belt up' in the rear as well as the front. Common sense after all!
I would be happy to comply with this.

Re: Belt up in the back!!
Peter Derham is a laypreacher as well - talk about Jack of all Trades etc etc etc.....
BTW how many bad accidents have we had with people not using back seat belts? (in Guernsey that is at 35 mph) just a thought.....

Re: Belt up in the back!!
I am going to buy a car made of sponge , and after i get in it surround myself with high grade cotton wool so the likes of Derham and Plimmerton are suitably happy.. :x As a safety officer i find this a bit OTT with our relative low speed limits , i think it should be freedom of choice.

Re: Belt up in the back!!
I think - listening to the news every day that the words that need to be banned are COULD and MAY - everything is supposition...this COULD happen if you - that COULD happen when you - and as for MAY - taking this MAY damage your health - drinking too much MAY give you liver problems - taking these tablets MAY help you lose weight!!!! Using your brain and commonsense COULD and MAY help you LIVE until you DIE (which we are all going to do eventually!!!!) what are the do-gooders looking for? Life after 200 years old??? the universe cannot support us now - so how great would it be with a world full of 150 year olds with no food and no work for the youngsters!!! Don't tell me - we'd all take a tablet to keep going instead of food 'quelle joie'

Re: Belt up in the back!!
I am very sorry to hear that Spirit - your brother was very unlucky - but it is still not the norm over here.....did he have the choice to belt up in the back?
My daughter's godmother was walking on a mountain path in Italy with six other people - she put her foot on a glacier and fell 700 ft and the friend behind her tried to save her, but went with her....should we ban people walking around mountains?
where does it stop.....We are born with a free will and are able to do thing freely - so we should be responsible for the consequences - cottonwool land is not a good place to be!!!! we have had many heros - now what is the norm??? Children too scared to move for fear of falling over?

Re: Belt up in the back!!
missed the point Karma, your daughters god mother chose to walk on a mountain, her friend chose to try and save her. Both made a chose, both knew the dangers of mountain walking, if they did not want to do it then they didn't have to.
Not belting in the the back seat takes the chose of the front seat passenger away. The front seat passenger says I want to be safe, so I belt up, back seat passenger says I want a choice, the back seat passenger then puts the front seat passenger in danger. Now if the back seat passenger said to the front seat passenger "do you mind if I do not belt up" and the front seat pass' says " no prob'" then they have both made a choice.
The discussion is not whether we should be wrapped in cotton wool but should we consider others, front seat passenger, police and ambulance who have to clean up the mess. To say it may or may not happen is neither here nor there. Think outside of the box and forget about over regulation this is about safety and not only your safety but the safety of others.

Re: Belt up in the back!!
Spirit, it is more about education not laws - regulation just criminalises the action (or lack of action)

Over regulate and inevitably the ordinary citizen breaks the law by accident or deliberately to make a point. And we are,for sure, overly regulated in every aspect of our lives. :x

Well what can we say? we voted them in didn't we???? Well no actually, we voted as we are directed, parish by parish!!! I wonder how Civil Servants are directed to vote - I suspect in the direction that their bread is buttered - and there are a lot of them!!!! Sorry I forgot to take my anti-cynic pill today :x

Forget the pulpit aspect, forget regulations and being told what to do, One question, is he right or is he wrong. (Make it two questions)
No one has really given a reasonable argument against the freedom of chose aspect, you know, where your selfish chose in the back seats screws my life in the front seats.

Which gives those that like to dictate to us a perfect opportunity to rake in even more money in fines.
