Jersey Population Update 2008

The main measure of Jersey’s population is provided by the Census. Census data are supplemented by annual estimates calculated by updating the baseline census data with more recent birth, death and migration data.

Jersey’s population was 87,186 at the last Census in March 2001. (The next Census will be held in 2011.)

By the end of 2008 Jersey's population had increased to 91,800.

It is human nature, you get sandy beaches, a nice town St Helier, plenty to do, poor expensive accomodation, but what the heck compared to Madeira, Poland or Liverpool / Scotland ( little sun) Jersey and the other channel islands are a local Barbados.

This thread is about population and of course the official census is a complete and utter moronic failure. So a lodging house is full of poor English speaking non nationals. Its hard enough to get us to send forms back. So most of the lodging house residents don't fill in the form. This suits the Government nicely thank you.

The truth in facts is that America has 8 people per square mile, the French have 10 per square mile England ( an overcrowded island ) has 375 people per square mile and Jersey has over 2000 per square mile. This suits big business and the civil service just fine, call it job creation.

Does it suit commonsence or the quality of life, for good local people in a small island. To answer that look at your infrustructure, Jersey keeps pumping our toilet into the sea, keeps building small boxes called flats, concrete is king. We have without doubt a two tier system of wealth. Those that are making it out of loads of people and those who well just pay, far to much.

The saddest and strangest thing is, if a very small very rich island cannot control its budget, for the good of its people, God help the rest.

BUSINESSES should allow staff to work past retirement age to reduce the Island’s reliance on immigrant labour, says Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur.

This is a positive statement from Senator T. Le Suer. Does this mean though, that three early retiring department sections, the States Police, Fire and ambulance will rather than leaving (not retiring) at 55 shall be given lighter desk or supervisory work in the same department, rather than go and get work as runner or receptionists for finance houses and lawyers officers. Obviously they are fit and able, also they take work from those, who do not get a good States pension.

Does this mean also with 1,089 approx. out of work, importing 250 people plus families a year is now a bad idea, and scrapped ? How times change when the money flow slows !

The problem of an ageing population is serious one. It is still a taboo subject involving population control, which is a direct cousin of climate control and needs objective debate and outing as a major problem to be solved.

Senator Terry Le Suer was against free nursery places for all parents, but was outvoted.

It's good to hear some good news from the CM. Credit where it is due.
