Retirement age 'could increase' Empty Retirement age 'could increase'

Post by GD Fri 10 Jul 2009, 12:11 pm

Guernsey's retirement age could be increased to 67 under proposals from the Social Security Department.
The department wants to raise it to help fund the island's pension scheme.
The department said the fund it used to pay for islanders' States pensions would run out by 2040 unless changes were made to contribution levels.
Following a public consultation, the department is recommending the age increase and that employers' contributions go up by 0.5% to 7%.
'Small changes'
The department said that, if approved, the age increase would be very gradual.
Pensionable age would remain 65 until 2019 and then increase by two months a year from 2020. It would reach 67 in 2031.
Social Security Minister Mark Dorey said: "We're recommending a solution involving relatively small changes in several areas rather than one or two big moves.
"It's important to remember that we are proposing these small changes now in order to avoid far greater changes in the future, and also because we're predicting an operating deficit this year.
"This is government doing what it has often been criticised for not doing: proper long-term planning."
About 3,000 people took part in the public consultation.
The proposals will go before the States at its end of July meeting (from BBC News)

A lot of people cannot afford to retire at 65...

Interesting question karma, the good news is for the Government by increasing working time , they continue to take in money rather than pay it out. They win on two accounts.

If you think its the police, fire and ambulance front line staff who retire at 55 think again. Anti job descrimination allows the managers ( clip board personal ) to retire at 55 also. Nice number for the chosen few.

I found this interesting: Civil Servants may be able to work until 70 - that looks like choices for one sector and compulsory extra years for the rest of the workforce!! Nice one if you can get it...this is dated 2003 don't remember seeing anything in the GEP about it - has anyone else??

The UK government is proposing something similar in 12 years time womens retirement is to increase to 65 years from 60 and eventually increase it to 75 for all. The life expectancy of a working class male in The Glasgow area is 73. What will they do prop them up as scarecrows. Not many 67 year olds never mind 70 odd year olds would be fit to work in the building trades.

so very true trucker.we have one member of our government who thinks pensions are too high and should only be increased by rpi.she has refused a challenge from pensioners to live on what they do for a month.whilst the pension here is substantially higher than the uk the cost of living is also a lot higher

..........also the RPI is based on a figure using Mortgages making them artificially low at the moment - and not many people of pensionable age have those - if she took them out of the equasion that would give a much truer figure of RPI (still means giving with one hand and taking away with the other....)

At the moment in the UK women retire at 60 and men 65. When the retirement age was set in the 1940s it was set up to reflect that on average the husband was 5 years older than the wife. ThIs worked fine for years until a misguided lady thought that we should retire at he same age, assumng the mens age would be lowered. She took it to the european court, who decreed that we should retire at the same age and the UK then increased the womens retirement age to 65.Women born 1956 onwards now have to work an extra 5 years.

It used to be 60 for women and 70 for men over here - then they bought us all into line at 65 (until it becomes 67) still rankles that civil servants get more of 'our' money to retire on and longer to enjoy it!!!!!

To Quote GD's post ( from above ) if I may.

Social Security Minister Mark Dorey said: "We're recommending a solution involving relatively small changes in several areas rather than one or two big moves.

Social Security Minister Mark Dorey is doing no favours to his own reputation, by putting out this spin.

Guernseys adminstration is expensive and not fit for purpose, according to a report that the Guernsey taxpayer forked out £350,000 pounds to corporate consultants to examine how Guernsey is being administered.

Why is Minister Dorey and the rest of the Ministers not dealing with the obvious back to basics houskeeping within all Guernsey departments that this scathing report refered to.

Why ? its easier just to charge people more in taxes and further money grabbing ideas to take money out of our pockets, than to instigate the changes that need and should be made. These are the people that promised with bowed heads that they would look after us at election time.

Once the " house " is in order and taxpayers are getting services and value for their hard earned cash, then and only then should Government ask for more.

Sack the Minister, this is not a solution it just shows he has no backbone.

Boatyboy.

Some Jersey politicians are catching on to the publics outrage over the States employees gold plated pension schemes and excessive commercial wages ( without risk ) . In the last few days two managers were recentley given higher grades because they are retiring soon, and so they will get more pension. This is not at all unusual in the lax Jersey administration.

Sen. Ben Shenton today caused a media explosion as head of the public accounts com. Saying that Ian Black Treasurer for Jersey was at fault for loosing as much as 11 Million pounds for not fixing the euro when the contract was agreed with a the French builder. The euro has strengthend against the pound. He will keep his job but times are changing Minister Mark Dorey.

Look at the options before digging more money out of working people from all sectors, or making them work more years.
Accountability and good house keeping are old sayings but more relevant now than ever.

JEP Tonight

STATES Members should be looking at serious cost-cutting and not letting senior civil servants play games by proposing the end of smaller services that make a real difference to Islanders’ lives, according to one Deputy.

Final salary pensions for senior public sector workers also need to be stopped, says Deputy Sean Power.

The Deputy says that he is taking soundings from colleagues on ending lucrative final salary deals for public sector staff because he says that the Island just cannot afford them.

And he says that with structural deficits of around £50m looming, Members should be looking at serious cuts, not letting senior civil servants play games.
