States tenants face rent increase
Guernsey States Housing tenants may have to pay up to 5.86% more rent a week if deputies agree the price rise at their October meeting.
The Housing Department has re-valued the properties it rents out and wants tenants to contribute more to the general maintenance of their homes.
Only 3.8% of the 1,800 tenants face the full increase as the majority will be subsidised in some way.
If passed the increase would come in at the start of 2010.
The department said it believes the subsidies in the form of rent rebates would leave it underpaid for its housing by nearly £10m.
As yet it has not decided how to make up this shortfall. (from BBC)
