Budget duty increases rejected
There will be no increase to duty on petrol, alcohol and tobacco in next year's budget after the States Assembly voted against the move.
The proposed budget was announced by the treasury minister in October and is being debated by politicians.
An amendment removing the planned duty increase was lodged by Deputy Sean Power who argued the price rise would hit "middle income Jersey".
His amendment has been approved with a vote of 28 in favour, 23 against.
'A nice earner'
The proposed budget had planned an increase of 4p a litre on petrol, 38p on a packet of 20 cigarettes and 2p on a pint of beer. A litre of spirits was to have risen by 58p.
Addressing the States Assembly, Deputy Power said rises were not actually intended to stop people from smoking and drinking.
He added: "The truth is our treasury minister wants us to drink and he wants us to smoke for very simple reasons - it's a very nice earner thank you very much for the Treasury." (from BBC)
mmm so where will he raise the necessary monies now...

Re: Budget duty increases rejected
Thank god that Jersey has some politicians that actually care for the people as they have rejected the latest tax increases on fuel, fags, & booze, can we import Sean Power and his supporters into Guernsey to replace Trott and his muppets who are only concerned with what they can get for themselves.
