Obesity strategy ‘focuses too strongly on weight’
FOCUSING too heavily on weight issues in the new States Obesity Strategy could send a dangerous message, according to Deputy Sam Maindonald (pictured).
After listening to various speakers in the Assembly, including Health minister Hunter Adam, she became concerned that such an emphasis could lead to impressionable people becoming overly obsessed.
‘It is a dangerous message for us to be sending out that it is all about weight,’ she said.
She criticised Deputy Adam for speaking mainly about weight during the States debate and producing a body mass index tape measure to illustrate his points.
‘It should be about healthy lifestyles, as opposed to just focusing on a person’s weight and their BMI, as was being discussed.’
Deputy Adam said he understood the concern but denied being inappropriate and that the scale of the obesity problem warranted the comments he made(from thisisguernsey)
She speaks the truth..

She does indeed - stuck in the middle between Dawn French and Kate Moss!!! and I remember Hunter Adams when he was a Specialist, doing my operation, at 7 o'clock in the morning he bent over me to see if I was okay and his breath nearly knocked me out!!! I told him so through the haze of the pre-med and he said he had just smoked his pipe (I wanted a ciggy badly in those days).....so I do hope he has given up smoking (I have) with all the dangers of mouth cancer smoking a pipe brings with it!!!!! (although he is much more Kate Moss than Dawn French!!!!!)

She didn't strike me as that large when she was doing the rounds to garner votes - but that is a particularly unflattering photo of her.....and if she saves one teenager (or younger) from Anorexia/Bulimia then I wish her well!!!!

I agree that it is not only weight. A friend of mine is classed as obese, which is a joke, he is shortish, solid build with a lot of muscle which is heavier than fat.
With teenagers especially girls we should be very very careful in the message that we send out.
