Heavy snow expected

By Lucy Mason
Snow warning alert!! 00863937_Cropped

There was a little snow this morning – but the worst is expected from tomorrow afternoon

HEAVY snow and freezing temperatures are expected to bring chaos to Jersey’s roads and could stop thousands of children returning to school over the next few days.
While the rest of Britain is on course for its coldest winter in 30 years, forecasters in Jersey have predicted that two inches of snow will fall tomorrow afternoon and evening, causing possible problems for workers on their way home.
Temperatures over the last few days have plunged to well below average and wintry showers are expected over the course of the week, including this evening.
And with children due to return to school tomorrow, both Education, Sport and Culture and Connex, who run the school bus service, are poised to respond if the bad weather hits.(from JEP)

Come on people.Even if we were unable to get out most people could eat from their cupboards for a few days.If necessary we can go without food for a week or two.Uncomfortable yes but many people around the world do live hand to mouth.
BUT I CAN'T FIND OUT WHAT AN "ORANGE SNOW WARNING" IS

This from Cable & wireless site .

Police are telling islanders not to drive into Town today….
They've had a lot of call-outs to crashes already today due to the icy
conditions. The ice and frost also saw the school bus service suspended
and that's meant nearly all our schools are closed today. Meanwhile,
heavy snowfall's causing severe disruption in central and southern
England. Flights from Gatwick, Cardiff, Exeter and Bristol have been
suspended. While Guernsey Airport is open, nearly all flights so far
today have been delayed or cancelled because of problems on the
mainland.

Guernsey's Careers Fair has been cancelled due to icy conditions on the roads.

The event was due to take place at Beau Sejour on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th.

All of the island's schools are closed apart from Ladies' College and Elizabeth College which will both be closing at 12:30 on Wednesday.

Some exhibitors who were due to travel to the event from Jersey and the UK had already cancelled their trip.

Organisers are in talks with Beau Sejour in order to schedule a new date for the fair.

Tips for keeping warm this winter

It's important in these cold winter months to keep as warm as possible so here's a few tips on staying toasty.

KEEP ACTIVE:

From vacuuming to dusting to walking to the shops, keeping active will help you feel warmer.

If you have problems moving around then wiggle your toes and fingers to keep the blood circulating around you body.

FOOD FOR WARMTH:

Regular warm meals and drinks will help you stay warmer for longer.

Try to eat at least one cooked meal a day, foods like potatoes, bread, beans, eggs meat and are all excellent sources of vitamins, carbohydrates and protein.

Don't forget fresh fruit and vegetables, they will keep you healthy so if you do come down with a cold you'll be better equipped to fight it off.

Remember to stock up on store cupboard essentials. Keeping tins of beans in the cupboard and bread/milk in the freezer will save you going to the shops in the cold/snow.

A warm milky drink before bed will help keep your body temperature up.

WRAPPING UP:

Layering thin clothing will keep you warmer than just one big jumper. A vest, shirt and thin cardigan or jumper will keep you feeling toasty all day. Fleece, wool and polyester tend to be warmer.

Thick tights and socks are a must have, layer them up topped off with a pair of warm slippers.

A warm blanket or shawl is handy for wrapping around your shoulders when sitting down.

Wearing the right clothes to bed is a great way to stay warm. A pair of thick pyjamas, thermal underwear and thick bedsocks will keep you warm through the night.

Make sure you dress properly when you venture outside. Layers under your coat, hat and gloves are perfect for keeping the heat in. Remember a lot of your body heat is lost through your head.

If you get wet make sure you change into dry clothing as soon as possible.

Good warm shoes with grip are essential if you are venturing out in the slippery conditions.

KEEPING YOUR HOUSE COSY:

Make sure your living area and bedroom are warm enough. The recommended temperature is 21 degrees Celsius. If it falls below 16 degrees Celsius elderly people are more at risk of a stroke or heart attack.

Try to heat your bedroom overnight in the winter, if this isn't possible heat it before you go to bed and take a hot water bottle with you or invest in an electric blanket.

Don't use the hot water bottle and electric blanket together as this could be dangerous.
However much you like fresh air try and keep all windows closed during the cold snap.

Kat to answer your question here in Austria each car must have ''winter tyres''fitted they are a special soft rubber designed to drive on snow and ice.

Austria

Winter tyres are mandatory in
Austria. The law states that passenger cars with a permissible maximum
weight of up to 3.5 tonnes may be operated only between 1 November and
15 April in winter conditions such as snow, slush or ice if winter
tyres have been installed on all wheels. All-season tyres are also
considered winter tyres if they have the "M + S" mark.

As an alternative to winter tyres, snow chains may be used on at least
two driving wheels, however, these may only be used in case the road is
covered by a complete or scarcely broken snow cover or sheet of ice.
Failure to comply with the law results in a fine up to 5,000 Euros and
the vehicle could be impounded. Insurance is deemed void if a vehicle
which is involved in an accident between November 1 and April 15 is not
fitted with winter tyres.
