Repeatedly vandalised toilets 'will not be repaired'
The States of Guernsey has said it will not continue to pay for repairs to public toilets that are repeatedly vandalised. The move comes after concerns were raised about the long-term closure of the toilets at the Halfway bus shelter. John Sylvester, head of estate management for the Treasury and Resources Department, said he was not prepared to waste taxpayers' money. He said any money spent would have to be taken away from essential services. Mr Sylvester said: "This is public property, this belongs to all of us. The people that are vandalising these toilets are vandalising their own property so something has got to give. "Either they are not going to get money elsewhere for schooling or for education, for health or whatever. "The money comes out of one pot and that one pot must be spent sensibly and we will not be spending money on toilets that are constantly vandalised." (from BBC) What could be done, to stop this? |

The entrance to the loos at the halfway are on the seaward side so you can't see them from the houses the other side of the road....

Surely the States are not going to give in to a bunch of mindless hoodlums. Kick the Police up the backside and tell them to get it sorted.

I suggest that the Police set up a trap - could use specials or the volunteers who are being used during the high tides. I think that any member of the public would be willing to take a turn until these yobs are caught. Then the court would need to punish these mindless criminals very hard, and regardless of age, NAME AND SHAME with photos too!

Where would you "hide" the surviellence group, how long would you be prepared to keep them on the job, the expense would probably cost more than the damage. Do you stop after the first is caught or carry on to see if it happens again. It may be better setting up a video/camera system recording all who enter combined with regular checks of the facility to narrow down any time of damage.

Maybe some toerag who is given community service could spend 60 solid hours sat on the bog and report any other ne'er-do-wells. That's serving the community surely. And a nice indoor job too so the Human Rights lot can't bleat.........

why not turn the loos into something like the nightime ones i have seen in the uk.everything is metal, including the walls, sinks, driers and toilets.alternatively put up turnstiles and make peeps pay as in the uk.
