Watching EastEnders on phone cost Jersey woman £900
A woman from Jersey said she nearly fainted when she learnt
watching an EastEnders episode on her mobile phone had cost her £900.
Sinead Shortt, who has a Jersey Telecom (JT) mobile, received a bill of
£1,900 for watching the soap and surfing the internet on her phone while in
Ireland.
She said she had no warning of the roaming charges that JT applied.
Tim Ringsdore, JT managing director, said there were shop notices and the JT
website carried charging information.
Ms Shortt, a hairdresser, said her usual bill was about £60.
Text warning service
She said she was unaware roaming charges had cost her £32 a minute for
internet access from her phone.
Ms Shortt said: "I got there Thursday, I got a phone call on Sunday afternoon
from [Jersey] Telecom and they said 'just want to tell you there's some activity
on your phone'.
"So I said 'yes, I'm away' and they said 'your phone bill's over £1,000'.
"I nearly passed out."
JT said it planned to launch a new text service at the end of the month which
will warn users when their mobile phone bill was high.
Mr Ringsdore said: "We have a huge amount of information in our shop.
"We hand out leaflets advising customers about data roaming charges we've got
a lot of information on our website and we're also developing an automated SMS
service to warn customers even more to be aware when your roaming that data
charges can be very expensive." (from BBC)
