Fears for the future of fishing in Guernsey
Mr Guille said running costs were up while sales were down |
A Guernsey fisherman who has worked in island waters for 25
years fears for the future of the industry.
The Commerce and Employment Department said as 2009 was a difficult year with
depressed market prices it could have led to workers leaving the industry.
That view is echoed by fisherman Michael Guille who believes the future looks
bleak.
He said: "Sales aren't as good... out running costs are more expensive so you
go backwards instead of forwards." (from BBC)
Like the growing and farming industries the fishing industry is dying bit by bit...
Re: Fears for the future of fishing in Guernsey
It doesnt help that we have no control over the English, Scottish, French and Dutch pair trawl teams raping the Boue Blondel during Bass spawning season.
We are losing visiting anglers by the bucket load because they are boycotting us as a result, Alderney are seeing the same.
Ireland had the right idea 20 years ago by banning all comercial fishing for Bass, the cod had been wiped out and the Bass was going the same until the ban. Comercial Bass fishing was making the Irish economy just over 3 million a year, whereas after the ban when the Bass came back, visiting anglers were making over 10 million for the Irish economy.
In the Bailiwick bass club we are yet to have a Bass weighed in this year!!!
