Guernsey chief of police is appointed _47814969_-42 Mr Rice has served in the UK Police in a variety of roles over 32 years



A new chief of police has been appointed on Guernsey.
Patrick Rice, the current commander of the City of London Police, is due to start work in August.
Mr Rice, 51, has served with the police in the UK for 32 years in a variety of posts and said he would be focusing particularly on neighbourhood policing.
The Home Department paid tribute to the island's current chief George Le Page who is retiring after first joining the service as a cadet in 1967.
Mr Rice said he was "looking forward" to taking up the appointment.
"Guernsey Police has a firm foundation and I will use this as a springboard to secure further improvements in the service which we provide to our communities," he added.
Mr Rice joined the City of London Police in 2006 after previously serving with Essex Police since 1978.
His service has seen him take on a number of roles including CID, the operation division and a secondment with the Metropolitan Police.
As commander of the City of London Police his responsibilities have included establishing youth offending teams, the drugs arrest referral scheme and the force's response to the Stephen Lawrence inquiry. (from BBC)

Last UK appointment didn't shake them up. Depends if this guy is hands on or delegates. If he takes the role of political figurehead delegating to those below then nothing will change, but if he gets down and dirty and delves into the force things will be interesting.

Its such a shame the job has to go to someone outside the island again, we donkeys must be really thick eh that we cant get the top jobs anymore.

Time will tell......... time will tell!!!

This may be a great opportunity for local Law Enforcement or a complete waste of money...... let's give the man the chance and see what he can do..... Guernsey chief of police is appointed Icon_geek

Got nothing to do with intelligence. Perhaps the local candidates do not have good enough skills and are too insular.

Surely there must be a suitable local candidate, someone who knows the island and what is required from the police force. Look at what's happened with the prison since someone from the UK was brought in, the place is an absolute shambles.

In the past we have had chief officers like Cyril Eley, Arthur Bailey, Mike Le Moignan etc who were all appointed from within the force, is there nobody around these days of a similar calibre?

Talk to some local cops and ask what their opinion of the senior management team is. That may give you a guide.
There are many there who forget that the frog was once a tadpole.
