A new shop for Guernsey's hospital friends
With the development of Guernsey's Princess Elizabeth Hospital the League of Friends' shop was relocated to a new area in 2010.
Barbara Minta, chairman of the league, said they are "very pleased" with the new shop and it was "delightful".
The league's shop sells items such as snacks, newspapers and toiletries to patients and hospital visitors.
The money raised from this is put back into buying equipment for the hospital that would not otherwise be funded.
Barbara explained that the shop was there to provide essential supplies to those who may have arrived at the hospital "unexpectedly and haven't brought things with them" as well as providing magazines, newspapers and snacks to people visiting patients.
The shop is run by a manager, who is paid by the charity, and a team of volunteers. Barbara said: "We do it to give something back to the community. We provide a valuable service that people really treasure."
As well as the shop near the Porter's Lodge the league also operate a trolley service, which goes around the wards selling items from the shop to patients on a daily basis.
The league has brought many items for the hospital using the proceeds from its shop including new furniture for the critical care unit and new machines for the dermatological unit.
Jean Peachy, who manages the shop, said, "It's like a big happy family", and the biggest seller in the shop are the Mars Bars! (from BBC)
Great volunteers who carry out an excellent service...
