Guernsey cars rally "Bubblegum" around Europe for charity
More than 120 drivers set off from Guernsey on June 5 2010 to race across 10 European countries to raise money for Aids charity the Tumaini Fund. Two of them are Shani and Martyn Torode who are taking part in the Bubblegum Bangers Rally for the first time. Shani said: "I think it's going to be fun, but I'm no good at navigating!" All the cars are decorated in different ways, organiser Brin Harrison said the most recognisable of the entries was a "Ghostbusters hearse". Martyn was confident they would make it round the 3,000 mile course, which passes through countries including France, Italy and the Czech Republic and even features a special track day at the Nürburgring in Germany.
Even though the drivers won't be able to speak the languages of each country they visit, Martyn said: "We've got a list of how to say what we are doing in every language of each country we are visiting." As well as just driving from town to town Brin explained there would be special challenges for the teams to complete that would "get people out of their cars" and experience some of the local culture. The cars had to be brought for less than £500 before taking part in the race. The rally aimed to raise £35,000 for the Tumaini Fund to help put 1,000 Aids orphans through secondary school in Tanzania. The teams return to Guernsey on Sunday 13 June 2010 and will be on display at the Classic Car Show at Saumarez Park that afternoon. (from BBC) Good luck to them all... |
