Moores angered by Pollet weekend ‘curfew’
MOORES Hotel has hit out at a late-night Lower Pollet traffic ban which launches tonight saying it will place a ‘curfew’ on its guests.
The four-week trial closure of the road will face its first test this evening when more than 100 people attending a function at the Town centre hotel will have to walk to the taxi rank instead of being picked up from outside.
Moores is disappointed by the lack of notice from Environment and has had its requests both for an urgent rethink and to change the times of the ban rejected.
The scheme will see the road shut to traffic from 11pm to 3am on Friday and Saturday nights after a request from police on pedestrian-safety grounds. (from GEP)
Well all I can say is I understand the safety factor in this trial, I have to admit that it not pleasant driving through the pollet on late on a Friday/Saturday night...

So yet again the general public is inconvenienced just to accomodate idiots who are too drunk to take care of themselves.

Why should some people be penalised for the sake of some who can't hold their liquor. people who find it difficult to walk a short distance are the ones who are going to lose out.

I must admit the distance from moores to the rank is so long , moores might have to prepare some packed food for that monstrous journey , Lets take a step back and think about this , don't anybody walk anymore . Its about 700 yards ffs.

Re: Moores angered by Pollet weekend ‘curfew’
I think Moores has a point.
Is the reason the Pollet is a traffic free area really because of pedestrian safety, let's be fair there is a pavement on both sides of the road for pedestrians to walk on.
Could it be that the pedestrians are so drunk that they can't stay on the pavement. Now people who have attended a night at a function who may well be older, sober (ish) have to walk to the taxi rank. Agree it is not to far certainly walkable to even a person of below average fitness. What I am concerned with is that some of these people now have to face the gauntlet of the Pollet with a lot of objectionable drunks, which would not be their choice. If the Pollet is the problem why not have availability for certain taxis from the high street end. Down Smith Street, Upper Pollet pick up turn and back out the same way.

Re: Moores angered by Pollet weekend ‘curfew’
Its the sheer volume of people in that area at that time of the morning that causes the problem , I have been there and seen the problems caused the ques for the clubs are on the pavements so people walking elsewhere have to use the road , for the life of me i cannot understand this fascination with having to drive right up to where they want to go , in future years to come will people completely forget how to walk. If you go to somewhere like Poole or any place around the world you have no choice but having to walk . As for people who have a disability there could be something put in place that a taxi could have special dispensation to collect those people .

Thank you Plimmerton. the distance might not be far from moores to rhe Rank. But for an Elderly person not too steady on their legs it can be.
Besides that person might be being picked up by a relative.what happens then?

The scheme will see the road shut to traffic from 11pm to 3am on Friday and Saturday nights.....................why would an old person want to be in the Pollet at those times or am I missing the point somewhere?

Just because a person is getting old, doesn't mean they have to be
in bed by 10pm. they have got a life too.
some people tend to forget they will be old one day, and not quite as
agile as they would like to be.

I would not be in the Pollet between 11pm to 3am on Friday and Saturday night! When were you last in the Pollet between 11pm to 3am on Friday and Saturday night?

Does that mean if you were elderly and invited to family party, you would refuse to go if it was Friday or Saturday,?

Re: Moores angered by Pollet weekend ‘curfew’
I am not saying you have to do the marathon but its not far so what are you are saying then no elderly people shop in town then , its not the end of the world as Alpy has said they are only closing it for four hours two nights a week , as i explained there could be dispensation for special circumstances.

There are dispensations now for special circumstances, ie taxis collecting and dropping off at Moores. This dispensation is being taken away. Moores is not the only establishment that would be effected, what about the restaurants in the area of Moores.
Shopping in town and walking down the Pollet at 11pm are a bit different. I can see that in the future function organisers will steer clear of Moores if they have elderly or disabled people attending because of the transport restrictions. Tourists will also think it odd that you have a hotel in the town that you can not get to by taxi after being out, then they have to walk through the pollet and be exposed to Gsy's finest. Great tourist advert that will be.

Re: Moores angered by Pollet weekend ‘curfew’
Its the pollet not the bronix ...............There were 65 shootings in the "POLLET" just last night alone. It starts at 11 pm they are not serving meals at that time , the only one that might be going there ( who are not in town already) are residents , and i am sure it won't ruin their hols because they had to walk 700 meters , if they are that concerned they could order a taxi to pick up / drop off the top of smith street or anywhere south of the Danger area.

Well you have just supported my point. If there were 65 shootings in the Pollet what has the car curfew got to do with it, surely the curfew should be for armed pedestrians and vehicles should be allowed just to remove the dead and wounded.
I think you are missing the point. It is not that people have to walk 700ms, although I think it is agreed that some people can not walk that far and would need to be collected. It doesn't matter when the last meal is served, it matters when the last person leaves the restaurant. For those that can walk and will drive they will arrange to park their cars on the Crown and avoid the pollet. It is those that choose to walk to a taxi rank by the quickest and easiest route that will be effected. Agreed there will be few of them, but why should they be subjected to loutish behaviour walking through the pollet anytime from 10 pm, let alone 11pm. If they wish to be collected from the Hotel door why shouldn't they have that right. Not everyone is a toughie, some people get scared at the thought of violence and drunkeness and it is those that exercise their right to be collected, and quite honestly the reasons they choose to get a taxi has bugger all to do with anyone but themselves, so I think Moores has a point and it will effect their trade.
Walk in the shoes of the weak and scared before you condemn that they may not wish to walk through the pollet at anytime of the evening.

Re: Moores angered by Pollet weekend ‘curfew’
No you must have missed my point , you can ask a taxi to pick you up anywhere you want its their job ,ok not quite at that door but even the far side of the De la rue 100 mts , get real if you go to any restaurant south of Moore's you have to walk as no cars ( apart from police) are allowed , where do you think these gangsters come from yes all over town so its not just the Pollet . at least the ban will cut down on the drive by shootings . It would be interesting to to learn the figures of loss of trade that Moore's will suffer , i bet they won't publish that will they.

You are allowed to drive a Taxi as far as Moores and you can drive a public car as far as Moores and to the two restaurants just up from Moores if you obtain a temporary permit from the Police station. Therefore any permit holder can drive to Moores to pick up elderly/disabled legally.
Of course they will not post loss of trade figures and 6 months down the line it will all be forgotten because people will avoid the hotel and eat at other establishments that allow them to go door to door. No matter which way you look at it those who wish to get transport from Moores for whatever reason will have that right removed because we can not control people in a public area.

Re: Moores angered by Pollet weekend ‘curfew’
In my experience if the premises offers good quality food , good rooms , or it is your local you will not stop going there just because you have to put yourselves out for what is a very small window of time twice a week at for most a late hour. Its just another chance for people to moan for what fades into insignificance in the grand scheme of things.

Re: Moores angered by Pollet weekend ‘curfew’
In loads of towns and cities all over the world they have no traffic zones!!!
Nan ...When were you last in the Pollet between 11pm to 3am on Friday and Saturday night?( I am really not trying to be funny or smart)
and if I was hypothetically invited by my family to a party in the Pollet between the hours of 11pm and 3pm...than yes I would decline!

Re: Moores angered by Pollet weekend ‘curfew’
I think you are all missing the point. It is not about how far it is to the taxi rank, or if Moores lose trade, or what time it is, or people are frightened, or not going to parties etc etc. The point is that the law abiding are being restricted in favour of the law breakers. That cannot be right as a point of principle.
How about restricting the law breakers for a change, a night on a hard bed in a little four foot square room with bars on the window would be a step in the right direction.
Make life misreable for them for a change, instead of for us.

Re: Moores angered by Pollet weekend ‘curfew’
I agree, it is a point of principle. Another case of the actions of the lunatic fringe affecting the freedoms of the innocent. It's happening with the closure of vandalized public restrooms as well.
What struck me today was the photo on the 'This Is Guernsey' site. A police officer standing next to the barrier, making sure the road closure was enforced. If they can find an officer for this purpose, could they not, instead, have stationed one in the Lower Pollet to prosecute drunken jaywalkers?
