Research by Which? Money found seven in ten car insurance providers and a third of home insurance firms make people pay for changing details such as marital status or address.
On average, customers are charged £21 for car insurance policy amendments and £18 for changes to home insurance details. But some companies are charging much more.

Consumers also face fees for cancelling insurance midway through their policy term.

But some, such as Igo4 Insurance, Masterquote and MRL Insurance Direct, charge a cancellation fee of £85.
A Which? spokesman said: 'It's about time insurance companies start treating their customers fairly and make administrative charges proportionate and transparent.'
Another rip off.
