Driving tests could take independent turn Empty Driving tests could take independent turn

Islanders taking their driving tests in Guernsey could soon have to prove to examiners they can handle driving solo.

The Environment Department says it's committed to introducing a new "independent" element to practical tests, after the UK changed its test format earlier this week.

UK drivers hoping to qualify now have to demonstrate to examiners they're capable of making the kind of independent decisions that are needed in day-to-day driving.

But the format will have to be adapted to meet Guernsey's specific needs, which could take some time.

The Environment Department will take into account Guernsey's lack of directional signs, which could pose a problem for solo learner drivers trying to find their way.

It's hoped introducing an independent driving section in the practical test will increase responsible road-use amongst newly qualified drivers.

Will this make any difference to the standard of driving on our roads?
