Four fewer senators in Jersey parliament plus election changes
Jersey's States have voted in favour of holding general elections for every seat in parliament on a single day. In May 2019 islanders will be able to vote for Constables, Senators and Deputies.
Over the next nine years the number of Senatorial posts will be reduced from 12 to 8. As of 2019 States members will sit for a four-year term of office.
The decision to cut the number of States members wasn't unanimous. Two separate votes were taken, the first 41 in favour with 7 against. The second 31 in favour and 17 against.
Deputy Trevor Pitman who wanted the cuts to go further and reduce the number of Senators to 6, said if the House couldn't agree to on how to reform the States, an X Factor-style approach should be taken. Deputy Pitman said the two least popular politicians could be voted out of the House. (from CTV)
