Lock up after spate of burglaries

Guernsey Police are warning islanders not to leave their homes unlocked after a spate of burglaries.

Eight properties across the south of the island were broken into over the Christmas period.

Items stolen include jewellery, iPods, cash, phones and war medals.

Only the medals have been recovered so far.

Detective Inspector Ashley Nicholas said:

'I think it is just opportunist. You know these properties have had the items perhaps on the kitchen counter, or on the kitchen table so anyone looking in through a side window would easily see them. And I think it's just a case of identifying there's an insecure or open window or a door that's not been securely locked. Unfortunately some of these have actually happened during the hours of darkness when people have actually been in occupation in the house, which is a worrying aspect.'

Guernsey residents urged to lock up homes

Guernsey Police have urged islanders to lock their homes after a series of walk-in burglaries in the island.

Det Insp Ashley Nicholas said they were investigating at least five thefts, but more may be linked and others may not yet have come to light.
He said "times had changed" and it was time for people to move on from leaving their front doors open all the time.

The thefts included medals, jewellery, cash and ipods, most of which had been left in open view.

Det Insp Ashley Nicholas said he urged islanders to make sure they locked up their homes and checked all windows, patio doors and sheds.
He said in one case tools from an insecure outbuilding were used to break into the main house.
