Liberation 'Should be like Bastille Day' Empty Liberation 'Should be like Bastille Day'

Liberation celebrations began in Guernsey with a formal service in the morning followed by fun in the afternoon.

This year's theme may involve rationing, but there's been no stinting on the entertainment.

The theme of this year's Liberation Day is ration, re-use and recycle - looking to the past to protect the future. The idea is to take the lessons learned during the German occupation, when nothing could be wasted, and use them to make the island more environmentally friendly today and in the future.

The Police are hoping this year's event will pass as peacefully as last year's when, for the first time, an alcohol-free zone was established along the waterfront.

Culture and Leisure have organised much of the fun going on in St Peter Port. Their new minister, Mike O'Hara, is determined Liberation celebrations are only going to get better.

He told is: 'It should be like Bastille Day, it's our national day. The big thing that Liberation does it brings us all very close together as a community'.

And some of the highlights don't end today - there's no need to live on wartime rations with the French market at North Beach carpark open for the rest of the weekend
