Locally-reared organic beef will soon be available in Alderney.

The island's Wildlife Trust uses cattle to maintain land and one of the by-products of the project is free-range meat.

A small herd of Guernsey cattle has recently been moved to Mannez Quarry as part of a long-term plan to improve Alderney's grasslands.

Grazing impedes the encroachment of bramble and other intrusive weeds and prevents grassland becoming scrub. Natural fertilisation also encourages a greater biodiversity.

The cattle spent the winter grazing on Longis Common and are now chomping the grass at Mannez - an area which has not been grazed for three years and is already under threat by bramble.

To help meet the cost of the grazing project, some cattle will be slaughtered to make organic beef available in Alderney. For Wildlife Trust members there's a 10% discount. (from BBC)
