Merrien is swiftest Brit in marathon

Great Britain and Guernsey athlete Lee Merrien has finished in a personal best time of 2hrs 14mins 20secs to be the first British runner home in the 2011 London Marathon.

For much of the race Lee was second UK runner behind Scotland's Andrew Lemoncello, but the Scot got into difficulty late on and the Sarnian caught and passed him on Birdcage Walk with less than a quarter of a mile to go.

Unfortunately for Lee his time was outside the individual Olympic qualifying time of 2hrs 12mins, but his time does qualify him for the British team selection.

The British team is being picked tomorrow (Monday) and Merrien's result should book him a place on the plane for August's World Championship being held in Daegu, Korea. (from CTV)
