Unemployment is getting worse

New figures show a rise of 40 in the number of people registered as out of work last month in Jersey, and 120 more than the monthly average in the first quarter of this year.

Those are the seasonally adjusted figures - altered to strip out seasonal and calendar effects.

The raw figures show a total of 1,340 people were actively looking for work at the end of May. That figure is 280 higher than a year earlier, but ten lower than at the end of April.

Long-term unemployment has almost doubled in the last 12 months. One in six of the people looking for work have been without a job for more than a year.

There has been a small drop in the number of teenagers aged 16 to 19 on the register. That figure stood at 270 at the end of May; 20 fewer than at the end of April. In May 130 youngsters were on the government's Advance to Work scheme. (from CTV)

There are many who could work but are too bloody lazy. employ these to clear the beaches of sea weed for the visitors ..you don't need any qualification for this or use them as a work gang for the new airport development .
Make them earn their keep
there are also many with in the prison service who could do these jobs we can find folks to do.
get into he real world and stop pampering them.

exactly kat...mind you as long as these lazy little creatures are getting handfuls of money they wont go to work..maybe they should be made to work for their benefits x

I blame the doctors for giving them a reason ..my hubby has been unable work with out pain for year but each day he goes into work .

the problem is just as bad in guernsey ..too make matters worse it seems businesses can employ people from out of the island (who in a lot of cases cant speak english) before they employ locals..somuch for fewer licences being given out eh x
