Court calls for action on benefit cheats
MORE checks are needed to make sure people are not fiddling the benefits system, the Royal Court has said.
During the sentencing of a benefits cheat on Friday, the court was made aware that the Social Security department checks whether individual circumstances have changed every six months. Under the old parish welfare system, checks were carried out each month.
The call came when a woman appeared in the court after she had illegally claimed £18,000 worth of benefit fraud following an anonymous tip-off.
Katie Marie Gallagher (27), who had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment suspended for two years. (from JEP)
