Guernsey Water has blamed a cold snap for tainting water at a local quarry, which has led to a strong odour in drinking water.

The company received a number of complaints from customers in the lower parishes in the north of the island.

It said naturally occurring algae were giving off a strong smell because of cold temperatures.

Andrew Redhead, director of Guernsey Water, has assured residents the water remains safe to drink.

He said the water supply from the Longue Hougue quarry, where the algae had been found, had been switched off.
